There have been some sightings of the wild canines around Lansdale's Wissahickon Park, the Lansdale Police Department said in a news release on Tuesday, Nov. 12.
The Eastern Coyote's numbers have been rising in Pennsylvania for years, police said. This is because "urban areas are a constant source of food, water, shelter, and space year-round."
Their migration into these urban areas can sometimes lead to attacks on pets, and on rare occasions, even humans, according to police.
Coyotes can become a problem if they become desensitized to human activity, so police ask residents to keep from feeding or approaching them.
Lansdale police offered the following tips to keep residents safe with coyotes in the area:
- Keep track of pets and children. Do not leave them unattended.
- Stay calm and aware if a coyote is encountered. Not all interactions will end in an attack.
- Remove outdoor bowls of food and be sure to dispose of the waste properly.
- Use fencing or repellent.
